Hi, My name is Anthony Taylor. I’m an entrepreneur and business consultant from Vancouver BC.
I’ve been running a business of some sort for as long as I can remember (Since I was 8 for those of you counting at home)
I think I started being an entrepreneur because I didn’t want to rely on others for money. My family wasn’t poor, but we weren’t rich, so I wanted to be able to provide myself the things that I wanted in life.
My “Why’s” for being an entrepreneur.
Obviously I wasn’t planning out my life at the age of 8 (or maybe I was) but the real reason I became an entrepreneur was because when I was growing up my dad had to work at night, and my mom had to work in the day, and they weren’t around together to raise my brother and me.
We had an amazing childhood, but I wish they had been around together more. When they got divorced I decided that I would be self-employed to have the financial and time freedom to spend it with my kids and my future family.
When I was 20, and well into my entrepreneurial journey my dad got cancer and ultimately passed away. Several years later, my younger brother also got cancer and passed away at the age of 21.
Even before, and still for a few years after, I had very important people pass away “early”, and it has had a profound impact on how I live my life, and where I chose to spend my time and energy.
I believe that life is meant to be lived and not traded away for dollars or on things that aren’t important. As they say, the future is not promised to anyone, and I do my best to live to the fullest every day, to spend time with the people I love, and to do things that make me most happy.
To be happy and to be able to meet my potential. When I die my greatest fear is the person I am meeting the person that I could have been.
If I lived a life where I wasn’t able to experience the world, learn and live the way I want to, and be working on the same thing day in and day out I would consider my life a failure.
Being an entrepreneur allows me the freedom to pick my clients, to be able to work on projects that I like and that challenge me, and to work remotely so I can see the world.
To help other people.
They say that your ability to create wealth is in direct proportion to how you can help people.
I’m extremely grateful for the fact that I’ve been able to be self employed for so long.
I believe that I can help other people who want to start a business, and add value to existing organizations to make the world a better place.
My biggest Failure
I had a business partner that embezzled money from my company and ultimately ran it into the ground. He left me with a huge tax bill, and so much more work than I could have imagined. It cost me over six figures and hung a cloud over me for years.
I learned a huge lesson then, and part of my purpose was to help small and medium businesses with the things that they didn’t know so they wouldn’t have to go through all the pain that I did.
It was a different type of MBA that I’ve been able to use to fulfill my mission and purpose on this planet. It was also the start of my business strategy consulting firm SME Strategy.
I’m probably not done failing but:
I figure so long as I keep trying to do new things and work on new projects there’s going to be a learning curve. This blog is one of those new projects that I’m going to endeavor on to help as many people as I can be better.
